Equine Canada Statement of Principal

Equine Canada (EC), the National Federation of Canada,
supports adherence to humane treatment of horses
in all competitions under its jurisdiction

EC is committed to:

• Upholding the welfare of horses, regardless of value, as a primary consideration in all activities.
• Requiring that horses be treated with kindness, respect and the compassion that they deserve, and that they never be subjected to mistreatment.
• Ensuring that owners, trainers, and exhibitors or their agents use responsible care in their handling, treatment and transportation of their horses as well as horses placed in their care for any purpose.
• Providing for the continuous well-being of horses by encouraging routine inspection and consultation with health care professionals and competition officials to achieve the highest possible standards of nutrition, health, comfort, sanitation and safety as a matter of standard operating procedure.
• Continuing to support scientific studies on equine health and welfare.
• Increasing education in training and horsemanship practices.
• Requiring owners, trainers and exhibitors to know and follow their sanctioning organization’s rules and to work within industry regulations in all equestrian competitions.
• Reviewing, revising and developing competition rules and regulations that protect the welfare of horses.

The standard by which conduct or treatment will be measured is that which a reasonable person, informed and experienced in generally accepted equine training and exhibition procedures, would determine to be neither cruel, abusive nor inhumane.

Jump Canada Levy

Jump Canada is the committee of Equine Canada responsible for the promotion and enhancement of the hunter/jumper discipline from the grassroots to international level. Board members are elected by the riders, owners, and competition organizers.

As a Class 1A to 7 national EC hunter/jumper competition, Niagara Equestrian Festival will remit $10.00 per horse entered in a hunter or jumper division/class to Jump Canada. This amount, which will be collected from each competitor at the time of entry, will be used to support a number of regional and national programs designed to foster the activities of hunter/jumper riders, owners and the industry at large.

These funds will be used as follows: 60% Hunter, Young Rider and Domestic programs* (*the vast majority of the domestic portion is returned to the provinces in which it is generated); 35% National and International Teams; 5% Administration including Publicity and Public Relations. Contact your provincial hunter/jumper representative for a detailed list of the programs available and to have input into the usage of these funds. This program is supported by Equine Canada.

General Information and General Show Policies

Equine Canada Rules – May be found at www.equinecanada.ca Every class offered by Niagara Equestrian Festival is covered by the rules and specification of the current rules of Equine Canada, and will be held and judged in accordance with Equine Canada’s 2008 Rulebook. All questions not covered by Equine Canada rules or Show Policies and/or class conditions shall be decided by show management, whose decision shall be final. Exhibitors are responsible for being aware of Equine Canada rules, and Show Policies noted herein. Ask the Show Steward or Show Manager if you have any questions.

Show Office – Show Office hours Tuesday July 8th 8am-5pm, Wednesday to Sunday July 9-13th 7:15 am to the later of 5:00 pm or 30 minutes after the last horse competes.

Schedule and Classes – Show management reserves the right to amend schedules or any class conditions, and cancel, amalgamate or divide any classes they deem advisable without notification.

Rings – All rings and warm-up areas have established turf over sand/sandy loam. During the 1990’s an extensive amount of sand (advised 6 inches to 3 ft depending on fill needed) was spread over the show grounds area to level it, then covered with top soil and grass seeded to develop a polo field, used annually for 5 years to host charity games. Should weather be inclement or extremely dry contingency plans are in place to offer the best footing possible for all rings and classes. To minimize using the same tracks repetitively during the show, ring sizes allow for multiple placement of jumps and lines and location of flat classes. Additional sand will be on hand for repairs if needed. New in 2008 - If drought like conditions occur, to optimize the footing we will have water gun irrigation equipment on hand before and during the show, using piped in water from the hydrants along John St. for better coverage than the water trucks used previously.

Jumper Ring 320’ x 240’
Hunter Rings 1 & 2 - 288’ x 176’ Hunter Ring 3 - 272’ x 158’

Ring Conflicts – There may be times when trainer/horse/rider ring conflicts occur. Management requests those involved to anticipate these the best way possible and develop a plan to minimize the negative impact on the horse show scheduling for all concerned. Please consult in advance with management/ingate staff for assistance. Empty rings cause extended days for exhibitors, supporters, officials, and show staff, and we hope all efforts will be extended to minimize these occurrences.

Non-Showing Horses – Are horses on the show grounds, for any part of the show, not entered in any “judged” classes. The show office must provide an exhibitor number. A $50.00 Non-Showing Administration/Medical/Grounds Fee is applicable, in addition to any schooling tickets required. Each non-showing horse on the show grounds must have an entry form completed, specifying non-showing, and submitted to the show office including appropriate signatures. Regular Administration Fee, Post Entry Fee, Drug Testing Fee and Jump Canada Levy are not payable. Regular Stall, Hay and Shavings fees apply.

Lungeing – May occur at the farthest ends of the warm-up areas near the stabling area at one end, and ship-in area at the other, ie. Not in the area of warm-up jumps and competition rings.

Parking Areas – With reference to the Show Grounds Map
STABLING AREA – Park in the designated area, away from the barn aisles, other than temporary parking closer to the stalls for unloading and loading. Trailer parking area is along John Street near the stabling entrance. Please move your trailer to the parking area promptly after unloading so as not to overcrowd the stabling area
DAILY SHIP-INS – Park in the designated Ship-in area only
OFFICE AREA – Park in the designated area off John Street
Niagara Equestrian Festival and show management are not responsible for any damage to vehicles and or trailers parked on the grounds, and you do so at your own risk.

Ship-ins – Effective 2008 there will be a $25 Ship In Fee for all horses not stabled. This is to assist with the show grounds preparation and clean up costs which include grass cutting, signage, garbage collection, water, washrooms, … that ship in horses also receive the benefit of. A water tank will be arranged for the ship-in area, but it is recommended you also bring your own water supply. Please park in the designated ship in area.

Horses out of Bounds – There are many wonderful areas to ride but please do not bring horses into the spectator parking/office side of the show rings as these are “manure free” zones. Do not ride between the Hunter Rings during competition hours, and in the field with the longer grass to the north of the laneway. Refer to the Show Grounds Map for clarification. Thank you for your co-operation.

Horse Discipline – Any rider hitting their horse overhand in front of the saddle, or more than twice behind the girth per occurrence shall be asked to leave the ring, eliminated from their class, and may be eliminated from the horse show at the discretion of show management.

Drug Testing – Any horse entered in any class at Niagara Equestrian Festival may, while on the competition grounds, be selected for equine medication control testing. Co-operation with the tester is required.

Dogs – We welcome your canine friends as long as they are cared for responsibly including being under control at all times. Fines of $100 per occurrence will be applied for nuisance dogs and donated to the show charity. Abide by Poop and Scoop common courtesy for a public area.

RV’s/Campers – Under 10 minutes to the Show Grounds are facilities for hooking up RV’s at Shalamar Lake Trailer & Family Park www.shalamarlake.com 1-888-968-6067 Line 8 at Niagara Parkway. From QEW, follow “scenic route” directions (in the prize list and on the show web site) to Niagara Parkway, turn north toward NOTL and first road on the left is Line 8. However, we advise receiving mixed reports on the quality of this establishment.

Golf Carts, Scooters, Dirt Bikes, 4 Wheelers, etc… - To be driven by licensed drivers only.

Veterinary, Blacksmith and Food Services – Payment for these and other services provided at the show are the responsibility of each exhibitor, payable at the time of service, and at the latest by the end of the show. The show will consider any unpaid amounts as amounts due to the show and follow steps as outlined in the General Entry Policy section for accounts not in good standing.
