INFORMATION ON 2010 POINTS EARNED AT THIS SHOW
As the year end points have just been posted for this show there has been some response and comments raised on what happened with the hunter rating for this show. In the prize list it was written that this show would have a hunter rating of 15. When OHJA points were posted the hunter rating was 6. The following explains why.
When I listed the expected hunter rating for the Springfest Show to be 15 in the prize list it was based on all the prize money being offered for the various hunter classes was in excess of the $15,001 required by Equine Canada for a 15 hunter rating, so I was confident that my assessment of the rating as 15 for the hunter classes was appropriate. Unfortunately two things happened to alter that to the 6 rating listed on the OHJA points.
Firstly, the Show's entry in some of the hunter classes created the situation where prize money offered was not given out. Because of the timing, the weather, the facility's history, the show management,... I am not going to speculate but if you have any views I am opening to hearing them, just the facts are while some divisions had ample numbers, others did not. The entry level in the Combineds, Pre-Greens, Amateur Owners, Juniors, and Adult Amateurs (olders) in particular. The rating of a show's hunter division, for example, per EC rules is based on hunter prize money given out, not just offered. With these divisions not filling, with a number with only 2 entries, by the weekend the hunter rating dropped to a 10 as less than $15,001 was now being given out by the show. I did take the step to amalgamate classes such as, Jr/AO, and Adult Ams, Lows, Beginners. This step at least helped to maximize the points for these entries vs. if they had been left on their own because by that time the rating was already impacted to a 10. While we had good entries in the pony divisions, which was very much appreciated, if entries in other divsions are very low and if the overall prize money given out doesn't meet the minimum threshhold for a rating, there will be an impact on the hunter rating for a show. This unfortunately impacts even the divisions that were well supported.
Secondly, I was making decisions on prize money prior to the show based on misinformation. I have no feeling this was malicious in any way just a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of the EC rules. It was provided from someone who I thought was knowledgeable in this area as the person has been actively involved in OHJA points tabulation for years. I had sought out their advice on a general enquiry on this basis. Their interpretation of the EC rating rule when I made an enquiry last summer is that when a show is rated/sanctioned, then all the classes within a show are rated (which is the term the EC rule uses for determining what classes are to be used in the totalling of prize money for points rating), so all prize money from all hunter classes count for the hunter rating. And similarly so for the jumper classes and jumper rating. Seemed logical so I acted on it when making future prize money decisions, with the next prize money show being Springfest.
Unfortunately the rule interpretation provided turned out to be incorrect which I recently found out after this Springfest show ie. not all the hunter prize money is eligible to be counted in the $15,001 minimum required to reach a 15 hunter rating. But I had already acted upon that information allocating even more prize money to classes that in fact do not count in the hunter prize money total for determining a rating - these are all the classes Equine Canada considers miscellaneous such as Baby Green, Childrens Pony, Beginner, Low and Pleasure, ie are not specified in the EC Rulebook, just are commonplace at most/all shows. That had been my understanding until being advised otherwise last summer. So for Springfest, the prize money given out to these miscellaneous divisions, some $2000+ was not counted within the total used to calculate the hunter rating for the show. This took the hunter rating from a 10 to a 6.
Following learning this last week a special request was made to the OHJA in view of the circumstances to keep the 10 hunter rating based on all prize money given out at Springfest as the show was already over when I found the information provided to me was incorrect and I should have not acted upon it. While my request was given due consideration by the OHJA President recently, it was decided that regardless of the source of the misinformation, the EC rules had to be adhered to and the hunter rating would be a 6 for the 2010 Springfest Show as is posted on the OHJA year end points.
I trust that explains the chain of events that changed the hunter rating from a 15 to a 6 for the 2010 Springfest Show. My apologies on the circumstances to the people that came and competed and supported the show. For some year end points are very important, and no doubt this determination has come as a shock and disappointment.
Appreciating that, for the upcoming Summerfest Show in July steps have been taken to reallocate prize money this week to where it is most likely to be given out and strategies are in place to address a situation should it arise to the extent possible.
The change in prize money for the Summerfest Show has been to some extent at the expense of the miscellaneous classes compared to what was offered by Springfest. However, some prize money is maintained in most of these divisions even though it is not counted in calculating the show's hunter rating, which is rarely offered at other shows. There is also more of a buffer built in to the overall hunter prize money should a few divisions not fill. There also is a strategy with a major class at the end of the show which could be enhanced to some degree if mid-show calculations for prize money given out in rated divisions indicate the show is just under the threshold needed to maintain a 15 rating. I appreciate that maintaining a 15 rating is important to hunter competitors in particular and numerous times I have taken steps to address it in the past. Historically the entries are higher at the Summerfest Show and higher entries obviously help substantially maintain a rating, and hopefully it will continue to be so. The 2010 Summerfest schedule, entry form, and more show information are posted on the Summerfest web page and the prize list will be up shortly. The revised version with class and prize money changes prepared this week is currently being reviewed by the show steward as required for all shows prior to posting and printing, but it is expected the prize list will be posted within a few days.
